Queensland farmers and graziers have a new weapon in their fight to control wild dogs following the release of a pre-prepared 1080 bait.
DOGGONE® Wild Dog Bait is set to make the baiting of wild dogs a much cleaner and simpler process.
Marketing Manager for ACTA, Paul Crock, said that the new bait had the potential to revolutionise the control of wild dogs.
He said a similar approach with pre-prepared products like FOXOFF® and RABBAIT® has already facilitated improved levels of control for these pests.
DOGGONE® is a pre-prepared shelf stable product, similar to our FOXOFF® Fox Bait.
It requires no refrigeration, is considerably cleaner than having to prepare messy fresh meat baits, and each bait contains exact amounts of poison sufficient to kill even the largest wild dog.
Paul explained that DOGGONE® baits are taken by wild dogs in a similar way to traditional meat baits. He did however explain that the new baits had a number of benefits over traditional baits, especially to individuals undertaking baiting campaigns.
The main benefit of DOGGONE® is the simple and clean nature of the product.
He said that the matrix eliminated the time taken to collect and cut up the meat for a baiting campaign, preparing the baits by injection or mixing the poison, and the messy clean-up. By overcoming all these labour constraints the DOGGONE® product actually saved money.
DOGGONE® baits are supplied in tubs of 300 baits for large scale programs or in trays of 12 baits for smaller programs.
The opportunity to revolutionise aerial campaigns is also a key feature of the new bait. With aircraft commonly used to carry out aerial baiting campaigns limited to a payload of 280 kgs, Paul explained that more than four times as many DOGGONE® baits could be carried compared to fresh meat baits.
Over 4,500 DOGGONE® baits can be loaded into an aircraft, compared to an average of just over 1,100 (250g) meat baits.
This drastically cuts the time and fuel costs of aerial campaigns by reducing the times required in returning to the airstrip to replenish the baits, allowing much larger areas to be baited more cost effectively.
Paul encouraged Shire LPOs and Stock Route Supervisors to consider using the new DOGGONE® baits in their local coordinated baiting campaigns.
There are some meaningful cost savings to landholders in adopting the manufactured baits.
Many landholders may have heard of DOGGONE®, but never tried it. Many that have continue to use it with positive results.
ACTA keenly supports the promotion of integrated baiting campaigns involving as many neighbours as possible, regardless of whether wet meat baits or DOGGONE® baits are used.
We are all aiming to reduce the damage to livestock enterprises from wild dog attack, and the larger the area cleared the more successful the program.
