Using FOXOFF® fox bait
A fox control programme
Breaking baits
Baiting programmes are most effective during breeding, and
during fox dispersal. Baiting during breeding in July/August (in
Australia) reduces the number of foxes born for next year.
Baiting during autumn removes dispersing foxes. These dates also
coincide with spring and autumn lambing when flocks are most
vulnerable.
- Assess the extent of the problem. Use spotlight shooting to
assess fox numbers or ultrasound to assess lamb loss. The
surveyed area should extend to a two to five kilometre radius
from the property.
- Contact the local pest authority for advice and for a supply
of FOXOFF® baits.
- Once baiting is approved, notify neighbours and encourage
them to become involved in the baiting programme.
- Bury FOXOFF® fox baits 8-10cm below the
surface. Foxes readily detect and excavate buried food.
- There is enough poison in one bait to provide a lethal dose
to the largest fox.
- Place baits at least 200m apart, on track or animal pad
junctions, at the rate of about 50 bait sites per 500ha.
- Check baits regularly over a two-to-four week period,
replacing any baits that have been taken.
- At the end of the baiting programme, collect and burn
remaining baits.
Regulations on the use of FOXOFF® vary between
states. Contact your local government agency for more advice.
Establishing effective fox control
To establish effective control over fox predation:
- Consider the true fox numbers in an area
- Think of the harbour afforded by areas outside the
property
- Bait in Spring and Autumn to remove young foxes and to
prevent adult breeding
- Use enough bait sites, and replace baits as they are
taken
- Work with neighbours to increase the area of control
- Invest time in the eradication programme—be
thorough
- Survey fox populations before and after the programme
- Protect working dogs by restraining them or fixing a muzzle
during baiting programmes
Follow the product use instructions in the
pack exactly. Do not invent your own "special method" of using
the baits. Do not place baits near property boundaries or near
housing.
The product use instructions have been formulated to be
effective in controlling foxes, while minimising risk to wildlife
and livestock.
